Today's Chronicle Herald Coverage of MOS Budget

*****TRANSFORMING CLIENTS INTO CITIZENS******

GEE... ARE WE SEEING SIGNS OF PROGRESS?

MAYBE........ This story provides some insight into what the municipality is/has been doing and fertile ground for further discussion..... http://thechronicleherald.ca/NovaScotia/1136490.html

We'll be doing that right here in the coming weeks as we discuss development strategies and approaches in Shelburne County.....

All ..... so that informed citizens .... can have meaningful input into the formulation of development plans and efforts in our rural community...... and the dialogue between citizens and those who work on our behalf can be engaged in constructive ways.

Considering B. Medel's normal fare on Shelb. Co. is of citizens who are facing court/jail time, this week old news is a small blip on my screen - now we'll wait for the Herald honchos to drop the embargo on SWSDA news stories.
Kudos to Mr. Cox for tackling the need for improvements in communication with the ratepayers of the district, but that little "one liner" in the SWSDA Performance Review result is still stuck in my craw.
I'll withhold my Kudos to the editors of both the Herald and Coast Guard until I see news stories with some meat on them.

It will be interesting to see what the town of Shelburne does in the taxation arena.Probably taxes will rise.Delaney is a waster...but the folks on Dock street are important....

I didn't know that Frank Anderson was so anxious to see Parker gone he supported Delaney.I'm curious if others had known this how it would have affected the vote.He may have served on council but have you heard anything from him since he took office?Maybe he'd should take a walk next door and have a chat with Bennett. They say birds of a feather flock together but they also say that silence isn't golden.

You watch and see that Sherm will continue to play games with Frank and hand over our tax dollars in January. Councillor VanBuskirk changes her mind as often as the fog rolls in and we haven't forgotten her support of previous wardens.I agree with a reader in an earlier blog that we should start preparing for the next municipal elections today. There are experienced people who with their good business sense and the desire to see improvements could make a major difference in our future.

l:28pm, How does Shelburne's mayor fall into the "waster" category? Give us the facts. Dock St. is one of the town's top assets, so any money spent there is a win, win for all citizens. We share a beautiful harbour and without it we'd have been toast long ago. Maybe Delaney is progressing on the wharf finger and road improvement with Anderson's help.Who knows what he's up to? Seems we've elected a man of few words but he should be aware that we are getting tired of waiting for some good news.

I have made this suggestion before and I am going to make it again.

The Coast Guard newspaper and the local governments should get together and allow the local governments to make a regular press release. The local government would write their own press release. The paper just puts it into the paper. The paper would not have to send a reporter, they can't afford to send a reporter to every government meeting.

If the local governments cannot write down what they are doing and talking about, well, I just don't know what to think.

Just finished reading The Shelburne County Coast Guard. No news is good news they say...except when you have to pay for no news.
The Town's budget item was brief. WHAT services are to be cut back Mr. Bennett?
The item on CBDC was brief. WHO is the Executive Director(her?)and WHAT types of new business did we gain Ms. Allen?
For the local gov to write their own press release that's fine, but we want more than that. We want full interviews with all who have the fate of Shelburne Co. in their hands, and we want to know what they are working on today in regards to development within the county.
We have lost 10+ years, and we can't afford them wasting their term in office doing more of the same old behind closed doors routine.

It appears Bennett is being "influenced" by Hatfield. Who would've thought that a Runic Stone would betray his old fans in Shelburne? What's going on with editors these days - they're shooting themselves in the foot!

Anonymous said...

Who is Hatfield?

What is going on with editors?

Anonymous said...

Bennet needs to take a snowy February walk. Remember Trudeau?

5:07 - Those were the days of sleeping in the White's treehouse after a Shelburne gig. Interesting that you think Fred is supporting (right word?) Anderson, but I haven't seen any items in the Vanguard either. Another embargo in effect?

Anonymous said...

The Vanguard's editor has had his head in a dark place for sometime,he carefully weeds out anything that may upset the gang he believes is still in control of Yarmouth. The fact is they are desperately attempting to retain power as the source of government funding, Frank, begins to think about moving back to Cape Breton. Or the Cayman Islands?

Are there any honest journalists left in this province or are they too busy digging a big hole for their profession?

When you go to the web site www.novanewsnow.com the Coast Guard's parent web site. SWSDA is right there on the Banner. They must have some kind of business relationship. Perhaps the Coast Guard. Well I just don't know

Anonymous said...

MY mistake The SWSDA banner is no longer on the web site www.novanewsnow.com Sorry about that.

If there was a SWSDA. a good one, you would think you could read something good about them at least once a month. You would think they would want to have some good news in the newspaper at least once a month.

Same is true for the local governments. You would think they would want to have something written in the paper, something about what good they are doing with our tax money.

Anon: 08/7:54 am. Have you ever grown mushrooms?
Local Governments use the same technique on us!

Anonymous said...

Mr. Cayer, I see you were a non-voting member of SWSDA so you saw Anderson's tactics back in the early days. Seeing the history of SWSDA unfold on your blog shows that all political parties were part of the problem, even Dexter and ERD critic Kent who didn't do much while in opposition as far as pushing ERD on explaining funding this RDA. The next few months are going to be interesting to say the least.

Anonymous said...

For all these years SWSDA was a society. On their web site they called themself an RDA,,,a Rural Development Authority.

Is that legal? to be one thing and call yourself something else. Can I be a regular citizen and call myself a lawyer?

Why not a swimming pool for the children? Even Caledonia in Queens has one!Dock Street is no big money maker. Just a place for wannabes from away to play out their dreams..............
Lets not forget the common folk.

Anonymous said...

My summer visitors have nothing but great comments after touring our waterfront. Thanks to all the volunteers who make summer in Shelburne a great place to be.If you want a swimming pool for the kids get busy and start a drive for one. Your mayor is in cahoots with Frank it seems, so he'll have some drag there. Personally I'd tell the two of them to go jump in the harbour.

Anonymous said...

Yes,Shelburne a great pace to chill out but when the tourist go whats left. This an example of the old time thinking .....I am thinking about creating opportunities that might bring full time residents.

Anonymous said...

Maybe your generation have had everything handed to them and still expect others to do for them. That's exactly how the BofD behaved. They neglected to carry out their duties and gave Frank full control.
Sign up, get active, and quit moaning! Your future is in your hands now.

Anon 08/15/09-2:58 PM -Well what are you doing. You cannot blame everything on Frank. He has his little elves and still does. The fact remains the waterfront has been lost to the few who do not want or need development. You can only play the Loyalist tune for so long.Everyone along the eastern seaboard is doing the historical gig.Remember El Paso over night everyone became a natural gas expert. The list goes on for ever.We are marketing ourselves as a retirement community. But once folks from away realise we do not have the amenities they will look elsewhere. WE surely do not need enemies we are self-distructing on our own......................

Anonymous said...

4:55, I know, DNFTT...
Being branded a retirement community isn't such a bad thing. I can't think of better consumers to have around these days.
As for your fixation on Dock St., we are fortunate the folks living in this old section of town have brought these Loyalist homes back to life. What a treat to take a walk through their neighbourhood and enjoy the gardens and architecture. The foot traffic in this area is an intrusion on their lives, but I never hear any complaints, do you?
Having just returned from the Street Dance it was good to see so many out enjoying a great band and their guests on such a beautiful summer evening. Kudos to Karen Mattatall and all her volunteers!

Anonymous said...

Eh,you drank the kool-aide..................
Yes,Kudos to Councillor Mattatall and her assistants.
The Exhibition was a total write off.
Not much left for the common joe!

Anonymous said...

8:56 If you knew of the volunteer hours spent before and during the Exhibition you might sing a different song. Why not volunteer next year, become part of the doers and stop sitting back whining about what we don't have.Crikey, I grew up in this town and we made our own fun. We didn't rely on others to amuse us. Try going a day without your negativity and you'll feel better for it!

Anonymous said...

The volunteers at the Ex did an excellent job!Problem is the people who could have put booths in were a no show. The merchants of the town are creating their own demise. Again the volunteers did an excellent job for weeks. The Chamber of Commerce were a no show.Town council were absent.( And they were paid.)

Anonymous said...

We may have to clean up own house first!I am refering to the local pols.Everyone seems to think they(local pols( are not part of the problem. We are all responsible. So far Eds doing all the work and taking all the risks with Tim chiming in onces in in awhile although he is working behind the scenes alot. And where is the COC? Wake up people.

Anonymous said...

Funny isn't it how our locals sit idly by and moan and groan, but it's the "from awayers" that are actually doing something in an attempt to help this community. Until we all stand up and say enough already, we deserve everything we have gotten from SWSDA - which simply put is NOTHING. We've allowed far too much to go on for far too long, and it's our turn to switch the tables on our pols, SWSDA, ERD, ACOA and all who have been involved in this mess.

Anonymous said...

Why start by picketing the local town on council meeting night. Get the media involved.ie cbc and atv.I am sure that some coverage from Pauk Withers and Rick Grant
would stir up the pols.

Anonymous said...

Please,do not blame all golden oldies for state of economy....We who have lived here most of our lives could educate those oblivious to how the previous politics manipulated in devious ,threatening ways. Not one party was fair to any but their so-called faithful/scared followers. It is great to see the opening of many cans of worms......EVERYONE: YOUNG,MID AGE, YOUTH AND RETIREES FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE KEEP WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE. Thanks !

Anonymous said...

Swamp THEIR MAILBOXES....COUNCIL HAS TO SHARE THEIR MAIL...THEN ONCE THEY SEE NUMBERS OF INTERESTED CITIZENS WITH COMMON ISSUES THEY WILL BE JOLTED INTO REALITY....
THEN LATER,POSSIBLY, "IF" ENOUGH PEOPLE WILL SHOW SUPPORT FOR PICKETING...GATHER by P.O. AND THEN DO THE WALK TO TOWN HALL.

Anonymous said...

08/26-6:41 There is a council meeting very soon.Everyone know where the PO is?
